China and the U.S.

Some trade diplomats and observers doubted the capacity of the world trade organisation when it was created in 1994. And in just one decade of international trade regulations, all the unbelievers in the work of  the regulatory agency have been proved wrong. Now, the likelihood of a U.S. trade complaint and the past records of the international trade group, when it comes to trade affairs regulations will enhance considerably the status and the powers of the international trade policeman.

Dipak Patel

Dipak Patel or the art of formulating trade policy with limited resources

Dipak Patel belongs to the new generation of african policy makers in every sense of the word. Because, he is leading the group of under developed countries in their drive to arouse the attention of the wto to the consequences of agricultural subsidies.

As the trade minister of zambia, his country lacked the necessary demographic and economic clouts not to mention online and business information sources to enable him formulate an effective trade policy. And despite all these odds, he is forging ahead to draw the attention of the world to the predicament of the underdeveloped world.

World trade organization

Is the world trade organization a paper tiger?

The answer to this thorny question is no because the world trade organization can be described as the policeman of international trade. Due to the fact that, the multilateral trade watchdog, has at his disposal, policy instruments and instances to enable developing countries bring up cases relevant to the consequences of (sugar, cotton and rice)subsidies against the EU and the US.

The world trade organization also offers trade diplomats, lawyers, development activists and public relations people, the opportunity to elaborate campaigns and influence in no small way, the position of the wto.
